WHAT IS MAIL ART?
Mail art is a populist artistic movement. Even a non-artist like me (or you) can participate. Yippy!
At its core, mail art (aka postal art and correspondence art) involves sending art through the international postal system. There is a range of activities one can participate in - envelope art, artistamps, rubber stamp art, copy art, zines, add & passes - to name a few. In early 2018 I joined the IUOMA - International Union of Mail-Artists. IUOMA is a 30 year old network of mail artists. In the beginning members corresponded chiefly via 🐌 mail. Then came the internet, and IUOMA made its presence known on a number of online sites. Since 2008 the NING platform has been home for its members. To learn more, read "What is Mail Art?" by Ruud Janssen, a discussion point on the IUOMA-NING site. One can also connect with other mail artists via platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, individual blogs, etc. This website is dedicated to all the mail artists who have come (and gone) before me. These creative and daring folks paved the way for the rest of us. I hope you enjoy your time here! |
